Fri 4th - Fri 18th May: Crash Sitethanks to mya and jack for getting the ball rolling with this topic! lots of artists have shown an interest in this idea so it can only help us further our skills!
the idea is to set fortnightly digital matte painting challenges to be produced at lunch time or in your spare time. its a great place to share critique and learn from each other, but above all enjoy it!
Crash Site: Fri 4th - Fri 18th May
Brief:
Using photographic resources, create an environment which sole empahsis is the wreckage. The location can be anywhere you like, during any era. The scene should be structured so that terrain/environment is in the background, the crash site in the mid-ground, and a degree of open space left in the fore-ground so live action characters and general chaotic effects can be composited on to.
You can use 3D blocking to help your perspective but WIP shots are required.
The final plate should be HD 1280x720. Good Luck!

Looks cool man!
I think the crashed plane looks a bit odd, it's a bit difficult to understand what it is.
Maybe with a little bit more of shadows/ light could help a bit to improve it
Hope it helps and good job!

cheers pere! thanks for your comments!
i have to agree that the downed chinook is of a slightly higher contrast to the rest of the image. i kind of forced this in the hope that i would achieve some dust haze in the background enabling the chopper to stand out a little more. considering there is no direct sunlight and just ambient lighting, the dark areas are too dark. i'll re-work it and try to balance it out.

nice stuff matt. i would say that your sky could be a touch brighter too get you that pop that you want for the actual crashed object.
are you solo on this or are other chaps joining in too?

cheers guys!
as far as i know there are some artists over here (unit 6) having a go, but its open to everyone. i think the more we can see of each others processes then the more we learn.
theres still a week left on this topic so theres plenty of time for you guys to have a blast!
i'll re-work my image at lunch and see if i can bring more light in to the scene from the sky like jake suggested.

I think you could improve the composition a little bit.
I did a quick overpaint. maybe could help
Now you have a clear path for the eye to go to the focal point
P.S.: The prespective is a bit off I know

cheers pere! ill give it a go
at first i did include this derelict building corner piece but the perspective was out. i was also reluctant to obscure the smoke plume as it gives it a more dramatic feel.
maybe i can strategically place a rotor blade on the ground and lead the tip towards the wreckage. that way i can achieve a leading line from the left corner of the image right up to the chopper whilst maintaining the full view of the smoke plume.
i will try both and see what works best.

You should use some 3d geometry and a texture with alpha for those broken walls.
Is very easy and it saves a lot of photoshop time to match the prespetcive.

nice mattes guys!
samir, your painting is brilliant as ever but im not sure you could pass this off as a background plate. its a great idea that would be awesome if it was executed in a photo-realsitic style! nice stuff though!
Mark, your plate is superb! i love the anticipation the stormy clouds bring to the image. and you have captured the desolate surroundings really well. maybe adding a few cliche elements like, the odd cactus, animal skeleton etc might give it more feel.
great work chaps!
