bank holiday fun

managed to have a doodle today - not sure whats going on, but it's the taking part that counts.

might get round to colourising it at some point hopefully...

also managed to get out to the peak district - hopefully i'll some time to "develop" a few more pics soon

more wip

awilson

tried a quick colour pass - not sure where i'm going at all...

mya

Very nice Aidan - great linework!
awilson

i ACTUALLY finished something. yay for me i guess!

awilson

started working on a sketchbook doodle today too.

awilson

and this is as far as i got today - finished?

mya

More nice work Aidan - I like the treeman a lot, really nice tonal work on his body (although I think you might have pushed the highlights just a bit too far in the second one). Great details as well.

cheers for the feedback mya - i think you're right about the values too, it was hard to judge at home on my monitor (greyscales not its strong point) but it should be easy to muck around with

*edit*

here's a version with the values dialed back a bit

awilson

i made use of my (purple) spare room and started doing my first still life in about 15 years

hoping to eventually tackle this sort of thing with ACTUAL PAINT at some stage, but baby steps first...

mya

Still life looks good so far Aidan - the treeman looks pretty spot-on now.
awilson

so i worked up one of the thumbnails from the boudica thread and here she is!

mya

v. nice work Aidan (though a bit big) - it's got a bit of a Simon Bisley feel to it.
cakeypigdog

good boy aidan!
awilson

cheers chaps!
awilson

a few more photos added to my flickr tonight - sorting through the amount of shite i snap is a job for a better man than me...

awilson

another sketchbook scribble taken into photoshop and given a tidy up

almost finished, but technically still a WIP

bennewman

nice!
zombie earthworm jim.
awilson

ahhh earthworm jim....that takes me back!
mya

Excellent!
awilson

so here's where i'm at with the "performer"

might do something to the background IF ONLY I CAN THINK OF SOMETHING

mya

Looking good - how about an enormous, hellish amplifier in the background?
bennewman

or a legion of undead souls rocking out?
awilson

thanks for the suggestions - i'll see if i have the time or motivation to do them, or maybe i'll just move on to the next piece...decisions, decisions.
awilson

went back and added to some pigment to the wormheaded fella

colour - a right pain in the arse

awilson

just found this on a polycount thread

awesome free fully 3d skeleton viewer with annotations and all sorts

check it!

http://www.nextd.com/bonelab.asp

(run it, click and expand the "VIEWS" tab to cycle through loads of presets if you cant find what youre looking for)
awilson

latest update from the "twins" speedpaint thread

and some stuff from my sketchbook - theres a few in here i'd like to work up into more finished pieces at some stage...

awilson

so i reckon this might well be done...

dandyevans

That's super cool aidan!
cakeypigdog

good lad aidan, really impressive improvement!
awilson

latest wippage - nothing better than shutting the curtains and working on a computer on the sunniest day of the year...er, hang on, DOH

awilson

me again

awilson

don't know if this will go any further - just some quick and mindless photoshopery

awilson

colour study for next pic (maybe)

shame only me and mebingo aka tony jackson know how utterly awesome BREAKING BAD is...
bennewman

that b+w one's really nice- i like how you're playing with the space/scale.
mya

More nice work Aidan - I like the head-eyes dude a lot, the colours feel like they sit together nicely.

nah, you just like it because it looks a bit bondage related!

multi-eyed man is great -  reminds me  of Todd Schorr:

i like the cut of his jib - even though it now looks like i'm merely an uninspired hack by comparison...

...well if the hat fits!
dandyevans

yeah he's pretty cool if a bit fiddly at times, plus I've just noticed he bears a passing resemblence to our own Mr Newman...

spooky!
bennewman

my eyes aren't as red as that.
awilson

dandyevans wrote:

does anyone else think those bunny rabbit costume ears look like, er, you know....ummmm

actually, never mind.
awilson

first one i've done in a while without a greyscale pass first - i tried to do the whole thing in colour from the get go.

the colour study helped A LOT, but it was still pretty difficult.

There's already some things i'd like to go back and fix, but feck it, life's too short...NEXT
awilson

and another...

awilson

ALMOST on the final stretch...

awilson

FINITO!

mya

Another good one Aidan! If I was to crit it, I'd say that it seems to work a bit better when the background's a bit darker, like the second image.

Do some more! - Your style's really coming on, and the pastelly colour schemes are working nicely.
awilson

cheers for the feedback - yeah, i see what you mean about the background.  Luckily everything is on layers so i can change it pretty easily.

i've got a few more ideas in the pipeline, but due to familial commitments my normal weekend drawing routine is due to be disrupted.

Still i guess its good to get out every now and again...like, once or twice a year.
awilson

its funny how your mind wanders when you're in traffic...well, this is the result. no real explanation other than that! might paint it up sometime...

awilson

spent tonight tidying up the linework in readiness for some full on colouring in action. - heres a mini-colour study i did as well, so in theory it should end looking SOMETHING like this...

cakeypigdog

good work old man! lloking forward to saturday!
awilson

so i've seen some of the stuff that gets into imaginefx mag from their forum, and thought - i reckon i could have a go at that! so i went over there and partook in one of their weekly sketch challenges.

i didnt have loads of time on this, so no colour as of yet - it'll probably get that and a few bits of tidying up....someday.

awilson

despite hitting a brick wall with this picture last night, i tried again this evening and started making some headway

i reckon its about 50% done - hope to finish it this weekend!

awilson

kind of nearly sort of finishing up...

i think the face area has resolved itself fine

but theres a few bits such as the arms/hands/feet

that are still bugging me. I kind of went in without an idea of how to resolve them and having got this far theyve not magically sorted themselves out

painted myself into the proverbial corner - so might leave this one for a bit and come back with some fresher eyes later.
awilson

another quickie edit

awilson

the mad gasser of mattoon!

awilson

so this weekend i was mostly out taking a few snaps - while doing that i took time to do a sketch OUTSIDE. THinking about it, i don't know if i've actually done it before. The main reason being that one feels like a right twat - hopefully i can embrace my inner twat fully and do some more of this sort of thing. In fact maybe we all can eh chaps? we could even use the cambridge trip as an opportunity for that sort of thing?

also still working on finishing up that "Hidden Treasure" piece...almost done. here's a sneak peak!

also got some photos to bung into photoshop, so i'm off now. Byeeeeeeee...
awilson

uploaded some new stuff to my flickr today as well - time to veg out for the evening i think...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aidanwilson/sets/72157616616267801/
mya

Very nice! The Peak District photos are ace!
awilson

thanks mya! hopefully i'll be able to add a few pics of cambridge this weekend - you better be a good tour guide!
cakeypigdog

good lad for drawing outside!! and more lovely photos.  top stuff you old tart
awilson

finished - at last!

also tried doing a bit on todays speedpaint - Death and the Maiden - and went absolutely nowhere...humbug!

*edit* did a couple more things this evening

Mr. Carver mentioned a Dr. Jeckyl topic over on some forum, so here's some sketchbook scans including an exceedingly rat-faced Mr. Hyde. Nowt particularly earth-shaking

And This is just a quick speedpaint for a topic over on ImagineFx, "Scarlet" (with a little bit of todays topic thrown in - i just couldnt leave it alone!)

now, to sleep!
bennewman

good stuff aidan! i like the van goghy sky on the first one
awilson

heres some edited er, "highlights" from this weeks sketchbooks

And thats probably it till next week...adios muchachos!
awilson

just finished up the "No face" speedpaint tonight

awilson

not much more to show this week, but i have been doing a shed-load of tutorials. A bit of a backlog had built up, but i'm making my way through them all...i reckon i'll be awesome at everything in about 5.7 days

in the meantime here's some sketchbook doodles

*edit* i spend a bit over an hour today doing a self portrait with just a pencil, a mirror and my poor face. (Trying to escape the clutches of my wacom/photoshop dependence and use more traditional, and entirely unforgiving, mediums)

I'll save the more sensitive souls the trauma of inflicting it on them here, but you'll find it on my conceptart sketchbook if your curiosity gets the better of you....
awilson

It's Sunday, so its time for some hot bust action!

Feel the Graphite!

*edit* also tonal/anatomy study.
cakeypigdog

tits aidan, tits!
cakeypigdog

oooh and btw, Ryan, Rachel and Esme are coming on saturday too.  So is my mate Phil (with camera in tow).  its going to be good.  Rich and Haley said they will also hopefully come.
Mya are you and Dbaker going to darken our doors?
bennewman

awilson
